I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

HILO , HAWAII: As the President’s Day Weekend was about to start, Ted H. S. Hong, was the first East Hawaii candidate to file nomination papers with the Hawaii County Office of Elections. Hong is the first candidate to file nomination papers for the office of State Senate, District 1, representing Hilo, Hamakua and Waimea. Ted was accompanied by a dozen well wishers and supporters waving signs, wearing elecTed shirts and holding up bumper stickers.

Ted and his campaign intentionally chose the day before President’s Day Weekend to emphasize that this upcoming election is about leadership and vision. Outside Ted told his supporters that political leaders like Presidents Washington and Lincoln showed what our political system can do when its leaders have a vision of a better future for all the people. Ted pointed to Governors Burns and Lingle who proved time and again of putting the people first instead of a political party.

Ted told his supporters that this election is about the need for a generational change in Hawaii politics, “It is time to move past the party politics of the 20th Century, and elect leaders who think of the common good, instead of what is good for them.” He said that voters need to change the politics of empty promises and vote for leaders who will fulfill their promise to work for all the people.

Ted asked for his supporters help in walking through the entire Senate District 1, going door to door to carry the message of change to the East Hawaii communities. “Our future as a community, as an island and as a State is at stake in this election, I would honored if you let me Stand Up for You” Ted concluded.
