The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Think the Trib has it in for Takamine?

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald ran the following correction today to a story that was published Monday:

Roland Higashi of Creative Arts Hawaii and real estate investor Monika Mallick made campaign contributions to 5th District County Council candidate Wayne Joseph, not incumbent Emily Naeole as incorrectly reported Monday. And, while Ironworkers Local 625 contributed $5,500 to the 1st District state Senate campaign of Dwight Takamine, Takamine's campaign returned $1,500 to the union to stay within campaign spending limits. The Tribune-Herald regrets the errors.

Attributing the wrong contributors to a campaign is a reporter's mistake that's understandably, though regrettably, made when sorting out all the numbers for multiple candidates on a tight deadline.

But the mistake about Takamine should be inexcusable. The Tribune-Herald and West Hawaii Today, both owned by Stephens Media Group, already published stories about the contribution in which it falsely accused Takamine of campaign violations in a headline that was never corrected, and the newspapers themselves never reported the fact that Takamine was not in violation of anything connected with the donation.

The newspaper did report correctly in June that the contribution was returned to the union upon the campaign's own discovery of the error, according to the Campaign Spending Commission, which makes the continued reporting of the contribution in Monday's edition, correction today or not, look like serious, perhaps even malicious, disregard for the facts, and raising the question of whether there really is a dirty tricks campaign against Takamine in the Stephens Media news columns.

Notes on the new Puna plan

Updated on Thursday, July 31, 2008 at 10:33AM by Registered CommenterHunter Bishop

Here's a feYoung Thaleia Jenness was dressed well for the occasion.w random late night thoughts on the day.

You have to wonder if this wasn't Councilwoman Emily Naeole's political waterloo. She got into heated arguments twice with testifiers and was warned by Chairman Angel Pilago that she could be removed from the meeting for her behavior. But with so many opponents in the Fifth District Council race, you can't count her out.

Naeole apologized shortly before the end of the meeting . "I glad you guys got your way," she said to the audience. "It's all right."

About  50 people staged a fine demonstration for the benefit of Council members on their way into the Ben Franklin building before the 8:30 a.m. meeting in Hilo.
