Banana poka fungus found to kill passion fruit

SID SINGERCoqui frog and waiawi advocate Sid Singer of Opihikao has discovered a New Zealand report indicating that the fungus being used to kill banana poka by the state Department of Agriculture in Hawaii also kills passion fruit.

Singer said a hunter in Honokaa recently told him about the fungus affecting passion fruit, or lilikoi, and found the DOA has known about it since 2004, yet continued to use the fungus on banana poka. The glib summary by DOA director Sandra Kunimoto conveniently overlooked the alarm that New Zealand researchers raised for that country's commercial lilikoi crop, only noting that the NZ study's findings "exceeded expectations."  Actually, the New Zealand concluded this way:

Notes on the new Puna plan

Updated on Thursday, July 31, 2008 at 10:33AM by Registered CommenterHunter Bishop

Here's a feYoung Thaleia Jenness was dressed well for the occasion.w random late night thoughts on the day.

You have to wonder if this wasn't Councilwoman Emily Naeole's political waterloo. She got into heated arguments twice with testifiers and was warned by Chairman Angel Pilago that she could be removed from the meeting for her behavior. But with so many opponents in the Fifth District Council race, you can't count her out.

Naeole apologized shortly before the end of the meeting . "I glad you guys got your way," she said to the audience. "It's all right."

About  50 people staged a fine demonstration for the benefit of Council members on their way into the Ben Franklin building before the 8:30 a.m. meeting in Hilo.

PCDP's on tomorrow, Walter on Friday

I'll be up and in Hilo early tomorrow morning taking photos of the "Rally for the Plan" and covering the subsequent County Council meeting on the Puna Community Development Plan. Should be an interesting day and I'll be posting on it as soon as I can. And if the subject's still pertinent, W.H. Shipman President Bill Walter is scheduled to talk about it Friday on the Mynah Bird radio show, which airs right after the 8 a.m. news on KHBC radio (1060 AM and 92.7 FM).

That's less than an hour away from the time this is posted. Sorry for the short notice.

I'm looking forward to Friday's meeting on the Puna CDP at the Pahoa Community Center. It could be one of the more lively meetings of the year in Puna. Or it could be a dud.

Moe touts HPP township plan

I see in the letters to the Hawaii Tribune-Herald  editor today that Walter Moe is still touting the township idea for Hawaiian Paradise Park. It's an intriguing proposal, which Moe says he'll take to the next state Legislature.
