I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Can't find out when the mayor's poll ends

I called West Hawaii Today this morning to find out how long the Mayor's Poll will be up on the Web site.

The operator gave me to Reed Flickinger, the editor, who quickly went plenty defensive about the Web site polls. It sounded like he's a little tired of explaining how the polls aren't designed to be scientific, that they're done to boost traffic to the Web site, and that he has little to do with that side of the operation so he couldn't answer my question.

Flickinger transferred me to a woman in the the advertising department -- yikes! -- who could. But she wasn't in. I left a message. A couple of hours later I called again and got the same voice mail message. I also called the number of the guy she said to call on her voice mail message if I had a question and she wasn't in. He wasn't in.

So I waited for today's online edition to appear to see if the poll is still up. It is. You can still cast your vote. Though I played with it a little and it doesn't seem to allow you more than one vote from a computer. But you stuffers out there can find a way, yeah?

BTW, Angel Pilago maintains about a 45 percent share since yesterday and Billy Kenoi has moved into second place at 21 percent. Stacy Higa's at 15 percent and, amazingly, Lorraine Inouye is still languishing near the bottom with around five percent of the votes. I wonder if Lorraine's poor showing reflects an older constituency that is less likely to participate in an online survey. That's my guess.

I believe the Web site poll was pulled quickly during mid-afternoon of May 13 after complaints that Mayoral Candidate Ron Riley's name was not on Web ballot. I can understand why Reed Flickinger as WHT editor would distance himself and the news department from the poll. The results are questionable.

Yeah, they can't figure out how to push the buttons. But isn't that crowd the one that's always forwarding the jokes and stuff on e-mail? Seems like the Loraine crowd would have the time to do online polls.

I see Higa is making some comments on his most recent blog today about being against growth:

"...Unfortunately, many of those changes have brought rapid and unplanned growth..."

I'm still trying to decipher this.

Suck up or Suck down...Flip or Flop...?

My direct question to you Mr. Higa if you happen to read this comment...

Is what are you trying to portray yourself as, because I'm very confused about what is going on behind all these hidden walls.

Higa... dang dude... I feel for you and I know the pressure is on... I'll just leave it at that.

Damon,
I don't get what's confusing you about "rapid and unplanned growth." You sound like a teenage girl trying to "decipher" more meaning out of something like "I'll call."
