I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Tucker rips county parks director

Rob Tucker, who moderates the Punaweb Forum and helped found Friends of Puna's Future, tries to effect change by using good information, common sense and persistent moderation in his approach to getting the County to recognize that Puna is not getting the services it should be. But Tucker apparently reached the end of his rope recently, resulting in a scathing critique of Parks and Rec Director Pat Engelhard's performance in Puna, which was published Friday on Punaweb Forum and in the Hawaii Tribune-Herald Sunday. It's worth a read if you haven't seen it.

Hey Rob -

You left something out: Why do all the other community centers have paper towels and soap (some even have toilet seat covers and deodorant spray) in the restrooms and Puna is lucky if there is toilet paper? Per PE: "Because people might use it." Thanks, Pat.

Why does Andrews have 5 gym sets and Puna Makai 1?
Why do the citizens clean and paint Hwn Bchs Park?
Why are our ball fields made of rocks instead of soil?
Because Puna still has a bad rep. Even though we are trying our best to overcome it. Puna has improved, but some people just haven't realized it yet. Please visit and see the new and improved PUNA.

I was in Aupuni Center the other day and stopped in front of the Parks & Rec display outside the department office. There were brochures from all the Big Island community centers (well, almost all) with the youth activities listed. You guessed it: no Pahoa. Thanks, Pat.

The usually diplomatic Mr. Tucker is entirely justified in his criticism. Even when offered cost-free land behind the community center, Parks and Recreation found reasons NOT to invest in Puna. HPP is currently in negotiations with P&R regarding putting a park on one of the twenty-acre parcels of land set aside for that purpose when HPP was subdivided. The HPP Park Committee has been making optimistic progress reports, but it will be interesting to see how far we actually get with it. Maybe they will do something in HPP since it is closer to Hilo and not Pahoa. (Only half sarcastic here.) Who knows? Meanwhile, we need to be asking Mayoral candidates what they plant to do in this regard in Puna.

Hey, that's what we need in HPP a park with toilet paper so the squatters that live in the park will have some place to flush their use paper.
You think I'm being flip I know. But I doubt many of you have had to evict squatters. The (last) time I had to do so, I almost tossed my cookies it smelled so nasty.
HPP needs a Police Department, and would be really great if it was private, so we might actually get some quick response and a little more follow through.
Let's set aside the parks and pools and roundabouts until we can get some dependable security. Don't anyone be so uninformed to suggest the HPP NW (trash collectors) the burglars certainly know there's no deterrent there.

HPP has a park, by the office. It's not used very much except for the groups that use the building. I have never seen anyone ever picnicking there.

And which of the 20 acre parcels would be used in HPP? Let's try to stop the continued thefts first.

Just was reading on the Robweb how another wannabe Punatic is giving up and going back to Seattle. I've set too many stones, and laid too much tile to leave it. I keep tootin the horn that says pay attention to what most important, that security and safety of your home.

Peace
